About curled up
Hi! I’m Shelby, founder of curled up. I’m so happy you’re here.
What is curled up?
curled up … with a good book. It’s how I—and maybe you too—dream of spending each and every waking moment: lost in stories of other lives and other worlds, lost in your own curiosity. This little corner of the internet exists to indulge in all things books.
In response to the austere state of literary criticism at the time, Virginia Woolf, in her essay How One Should Read a Book, offered up an antidote: “the opinion of people reading for the love of reading, slowly and unprofessionally, and judging with great sympathy and yet with great severity”.
That’s what curled up is all about. I love to read; I read a lot. With an endless amount of books to read, more than one can in any lifetime—the ultimate tragedy—I hope to provide both sympathetic and severe opinions, along with ideas and inspiration.
What can you expect from curled up?
You can expect three things:
Ideas
These will be explorations in or around the world of books.
“I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear.” — Joan Didion
Opinions
curled up’s bread and butter: book reviews. And will occasionally feature special guests’ reviews too!
Inspiration
Think of these as highlights or roundups. They’ll come monthly, and might consist of current fascinations, object and content recommendations, interviews with cool people, visual inspo, reading tips and tricks, and much more that I’ll uncover along the way, all through the lens of books.
Just as an FYI — when I link a book, I’m doing so with my Bookshop.org affiliate link. So when you buy books through that link, you’re not only supporting this newsletter, but also independent bookstores everywhere!
